The Kooky Book Girl Appears!

My name is Angelique, as you might have guessed from the title. I recently graduated from the University of Florida, and I’m currently finding new ways all the time to keep myself entertained. Right now, that happens to be singing female barbershop, and writing stories.

Fiction is something that’s had a soft spot in my heart for well over a decade at this point. I have stacks and stacks of literature that will never see the light of day. I wouldn’t be a writer if I didn’t have piles and piles of useless material.

Participating in National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo for short), kind of kick-started me. I’m now at a point where I can rifle through those piles of useless material, build on a half-way decent concept, and (at least I think) make a pretty decent book.

So in the last three or four years, I’ve taken to it in earnest as, at least, a side job. And when I started to actually consider pursuing a writing career as not just a means of escape, but a means of finding A) something to do with my degree and B) something that could lead me into financial fulfillment, I was pretty much sold.

All I had to do was get my novel ready for publishing, find a publisher, and ride the rails to fortune, glory, and the ever lucrative book deal!

And then I woke up.

Look in your favorite book store. You might be in there to just find your favorite movie’s inspiration, or pick up a magazine or something, but very rarely do people actually venture into the bookstores these days to just peruse. Very few, if any of these books even get looked at. And these are the people who made it. Don’t get me started on the millions that got rejected in favor of the author whose book is gathering dust on the shelves.

So what should I do? What should anyone who wants to be an author today do? Should we give up before we’re ahead and ‘go find a real job?’

I don’t really think so, even if that’s what everyone has told us to do. The beauty of our generation is that we are desperately driven to become self-motivated. If we can’t find someone to help us through it, then by God, we’ll just do it ourselves. Self-publishing sites have sprung up all over the place, and people are going out to pound the pavement and sell books a half dozen at a time, if need be. Not everyone knows someone in the publishing business. Not everyone has the perfect amount of connections. But I do think that anyone who really wants to write and can write a good book has nothing better to do than at least give it a try.

So I’ll hopefully be taking up the reins as The Kooky Book Girl here. Along with the eventual posting of serial fiction, I’ll be exploring a lot of different areas, including but not limited to:

  • Hollywood Books
  • The Art of Getting Your Work Published
  • Millennial Fiction

Hope you stay tuned and see you soon! Angelique
